“Louis Turcanu” Emergency Hospital for Children Timisoara

ELPIS Association has joined the fundraising campaign launched several months ago by “Louis Turcanu” Emergency Hospital for Children Timisoara, the main pediatric hospital in Western Romania, whose viability is seriously challenged at the moment.

With more than a century-long tradition of providing medical care and 200 patients treated each day, the hospital founded in 1903 is now facing the threat of not being able to ensure continuity for some important services. The Sections of Pediatric Surgery and Orthopedics, including the Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Departments, Otolaryngology (ENT), Ophthalmology, Pulmonary, Phthisiology and also the Laboratory could be closed down.

Due to some legal issues concerning property restitution of the current building and to several of its sections being under eviction procedures already, the construction of a new five-story building, with a capacity of 170 beds, became a must in order for the hospital to be able to function properly. The new edifice could also shelter the Clinical Division of Neonatology – Prematures, the Radiology and Imaging Laboratory and the Pathological Anatomy Laboratory, as well as the administrative services, which currently operate in improper working conditions.

The necessary amount of money is estimated at 15 million RON, but the campaign held under the slogan “Spare one leu for your child” by the Association for “Louis Turcanu” Emergency Hospital for Children Timisoara, hasn’t been very successful in the past few months. ELPIS Association is supporting this cause and has joined in the effort to raise money for solving this problem that concerns the entire community.
